Open Question: Traverse City, Peoria, IL, or Other for Mother Daughter Trip?

My mom & I are going on our 14th annual Mother Daughter Trip & we need suggestions/input. I live in the chicago suburbs and she lives in the Indianapolis area. We want to drive somewhere this year between 2-6hrs from those points (but up to 8 is ok and we do want to go somewhere new). We are wanting to go in early October. What we are looking for is a bit of shopping (not antiquing), maybe a winery, something specific or interesting to the area, and a nicer place to go for late night drinks one night. Any comments about the two places we are considering- Traverse City, MI (too cold?) or Peoria, IL (too boring?)? Or any other suggestions (not Downtown Chicago, Louisville, St. Louis, Galena,or the Dells, all have been done).
